Tuesday, 13th January 2026

Leverhulme Academy Trust has recently been featured in a Department for Education (DfE) sustainability snapshot, highlighting the work taking place across our schools to support climate action, biodiversity and green careers.
The DfE feature outlines how the Trust has developed a shared approach to sustainability through its three-year Sustainability Strategy, led by our Trust Sustainability Lead and shaped around four key priorities: Decarbonisation, Adaptation and Resilience, Biodiversity and Climate Education and Green Careers.
Below is the case study as published by the Department for Education.

Sustainability Across Leverhulme Academy Trust: A Growing, Shared Mission
Leverhulme Academy Trust is proud to champion a strong and united commitment to sustainability, reflected throughout our Trust Strategic Plan. Guided by our Trust Sustainability Lead, we have launched a comprehensive three-year Sustainability Strategy shaped around four key aims: Decarbonisation, Adaptation and Resilience, Biodiversity, and Climate Education and Green Careers.
Trust-Wide Action in Full Flow
Across the Trust, sustainability is already thriving. All schools have taken an active role in high-impact national initiatives, including Earth Day, World Environment Day, Switch Off Fortnight, Cycle to School Week, Green Careers Week and the annual Leverhulme Litter Pick. During the litter pick, pupil leaders collaborate with local groups Love Bolton, Hate Litter and Bolton Borough Litter Pickers to tackle litter and improve their communities.
This year also marks the launch of our new cross-Trust, pupil-led Plastics Project, focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling plastics in every school. Alongside this, the Trust is investing in sustainability infrastructure, including installing EV chargers across all school sites to support cleaner, greener travel.
School Spotlight: Action Across the Trust
Every school has created a bespoke Climate Action Plan aligned with Trust priorities — and the progress has been inspiring.
Rivington and Blackrod High School is leading on decarbonisation, replacing outdated heating systems with renewable, energy-efficient solutions.
Harper Green School continues to strengthen pupil leadership through regular litter-picking events and its successful bike MOTs programme.
Lostock Primary School has had a particularly strong year, earning the Green Flag Award with Distinction, winning the Bolton MP’s Anti-Littering Campaign, hosting a community-focused Sustainable Summer Fair, and running a popular Carrot Growing Competition to engage pupils in sustainability through hands-on learning.
A Shared Vision for a Greener Future
Together, our schools demonstrate an ambitious, collaborative and future-focused approach to sustainability — one that empowers pupils, enriches communities and supports meaningful change across the Trust.
