We are delighted that Lostock Primary School has been recognised for its efforts to tackle litter, being named the overall winner in the Bin It for Bolton competition.
Children across the Bolton West constituency took part in the competition as part of the Bin It for Bolton campaign, launched earlier this year by MP Phil Brickell. The initiative aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage everyone to take greater pride in their communities.
The competition invited pupils to design creative educational materials to discourage littering and fly-tipping. Lostock Primary School’s Eco-Team impressed judges with their inspiring approach and dedication to keeping their school and local area clean.
Pupil Saima Tabani said, “I’m really happy we won because we worked so hard as a team, picking up litter to help the planet. It feels amazing to help clean up our school and Bolton.”
Runners-up included Samuel S from Westhoughton and Jensen K from St Bartholomew’s in Westhoughton.
Vicki Guest, Executive Headteacher and Sustainability Lead at Lostock Primary School, said, “We are absolutely thrilled that our Eco Council has won the MP’s anti-littering campaign competition. This recognition is a testament to the passion, commitment and leadership our pupils show in tackling environmental issues.”
MP Phil Brickell praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of engaging young people in environmental education, “From my visits to schools and talking with families, I know many parents are often educated on matters by their own children after they’ve learnt about it at school. Some of the children even completed the activity in their own time, showing how much they care about our environment. Nobody should have to live with other people’s rubbish spoiling their area.”
He added, “Whilst this won’t solve the problem on its own, I am in contact with the council to look at how we can improve local neighbourhoods through better reporting of fly-tipping and stronger enforcement action.”
Ben Hargrove, member of the school’s Sustainability Leadership Team, said, “I’m so proud of the Eco Council for their creativity and hard work on this project. The video really showcased the effort they’ve put into litter picking, not just in school, but across the wider Bolton community. They care deeply about making a difference and it’s been amazing to support them as they turned their ideas into something powerful and inspiring.”
The campaign was supported by J Dickinson & Sons Ltd, with Nicola Entwistle from the company adding, “With over 85 years of experience in the waste industry and a strong presence in our community, we’re passionate about championing initiatives like this. By educating younger generations on the consequences of littering and fly-tipping, we can make a meaningful impact on our local areas. A huge congratulations to the Eco Council at Lostock Primary School for emerging as the overall winners of the competition!”
